Jeff Penn has been booking and promoting comedy since 1975 when he was a student concert coordinator at the University of Maryland in College Park. During that period, he worked with such comedy acts as Steve Martin, Robert Klein, Lily Tomlin and Jimmie “J.J.” Walker, as well as several editions of “Catch A Rising Star On Tour” with artists such as Richard Belzer and Pat Benatar.
In 1980, Jeff became the talent buyer and production manager for Garvin’s Laugh Inn Comedy Club in Washington, D.C. While there, he formed Comiclubs International, Inc. He is credited with booking the first D.C. appearances of many of today’s best known stars including Tim Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Eddie Murphy, and Rosie O’Donnell, who he helped coach through several of her “Star Search” appearances.
Selling Comiclubs in 1984, Jeff acted as a talent buyer and consultant for theaters and comedy nightclubs all over the U.S. and abroad, including booking dates on Comedian Billy Connolly’s first American tour in 1986, and the 1987 and 1990 editions of the “Comedy Crusade Against Diabetes”.
During his long involvement with comedy, Jeff has earned a reputation as an expert in the field. He has been often quoted in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Baltimore Sun, and has made appearances on several radio and television programs including ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America”, and National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition”.
Jeff and his then client, Canadian comedian Marty Putz, helped launch the Carlton Television Network in London, England, with Marty making a co-starring appearance on “A Carlton New Year” along with Bea Arthur, British comic superstar Ben Elton, and musical guest Paul McCartney.
In recent years, Penn has also served as talent associate to Steve Martin, Tommy Davidson, Larry David, Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, The Smothers Brothers, Bill Cosby, Betty White, Jack Black, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jay Leno for editions of the annual MARK TWAIN PRIZE television specials at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as well as for Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Carole King for five editions of The GERSWIN PRIZE FOR AMERICAN SONGWRITER at the White House.
Jeff Penn is President of Proper Entertainment, Inc., a comedy management and promotion company which represents and consults to entertainers, promoters, and venues internationally. While the artist services side continues to thrive, Penn continues to promote and coordinate concerts and special events for live venues and television. In addition, Proper Entertainment has successfully branched out into the corporate field, buying talent and producing events for a number of businesses, charitable organizations and conventions.
Jeff is now thrilled to join the staff at the All-New HOUND RADIO, and bring comedy into households throughout the Washington D.C. market and around the world.
